Troops of the Nigerian Army under the 13 Brigade have successfully repelled a deadly ambush by suspected armed criminals in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State, killing four attackers during a fierce gun battle.
The incident occurred on March 12, 2026, after soldiers were deployed to Odonget community following rising tensions linked to a communal dispute in the area.
In a statement issued by Major Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for Headquarters 13 Brigade, troops stationed in Ochon and Alesi acted swiftly after receiving credible intelligence about the brewing crisis.
According to the statement, the soldiers immediately mobilised to the community, conducting patrols and a show of force that helped calm the situation and temporarily restore peace between the feuding groups.
However, while the troops were returning to their base after stabilising the area, they encountered a road obstruction allegedly set up by unknown individuals.
As the soldiers attempted to clear the blockage, they suddenly came under a coordinated ambush by armed gunmen.
“While trying to remove the obstruction, the troops were attacked by unknown gunmen, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire,” the statement said.
Following the attack, the troops quickly sent a contact report, prompting the immediate deployment of reinforcements from the 245 Battalion.
The reinforcements arrived with armoured vehicles and tactical support equipment, helping the soldiers overpower the attackers after an intense firefight.
Military authorities confirmed that four of the gunmen were killed during the encounter, while several others fled the scene with possible injuries.
One soldier sustained injuries during the clash and was evacuated to Jennifer Hospital in Ochon, Obubra Local Government Area, where he is currently receiving treatment.
In response to the attack, troops have launched cordon-and-search operations across nearby communities believed to be linked to the assailants in a bid to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent further security breaches.
Security forces have also imposed a curfew in the affected area to restrict movement and prevent criminal elements from regrouping.
The Commander of the 13 Brigade, Brigadier General Patrick Alimikhena, praised the troops for their bravery and professionalism during the operation.
He reassured residents of Cross River State that the Nigerian Army remains committed to protecting lives and maintaining peace within the region.
Authorities also urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing operations.
