Paul University, Awka, Anambra State, has placed an academic support staff member and Anglican priest, Ven. Cornelius C. Eze, on indefinite suspension over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a student.
The university announced that the suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of an internal disciplinary process and an ongoing police investigation.
According to a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Rev. Godisplan Onukwufor, the university became aware of the allegations on July 14, 2026, and immediately invited security agencies to intervene in order to maintain peace and prevent any breakdown of law and order on campus.
Paul University stated that Ven. Eze, who serves as a Practical Biology Technologist in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, was suspended as an administrative measure without prejudice to the outcome of the investigations.
The development follows an earlier clarification by Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, which denied social media reports claiming that those involved in the incident were members of its staff or student population.
A video circulating on social media allegedly linked to the incident has attracted widespread attention. However, the university did not confirm the authenticity of the footage or comment on the specific circumstances surrounding it.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding students and staff, Paul University said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, abuse of office, and other forms of inappropriate behaviour. The institution added that anyone found culpable after due process would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with its regulations and Nigerian law.
The university also disclosed that counselling and psychological support would be made available to any affected student and members of the university community who may require assistance.
Management urged the public to avoid speculation and the spread of unverified information while investigations continue, assuring parents, students, and staff that further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
