The African Union has reaffirmed its strong support for the rights of the Palestinian people while cautioning Israel against actions it described as illegal in occupied territories, particularly in Jerusalem.
In a statement released on Saturday, the continental body stressed the importance of respecting international law and preserving the historic and religious status of the holy city of Jerusalem.
The African Union reiterated its longstanding position supporting the inalienable rights of Palestinians, including their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state.
According to the organisation, Israel — as the occupying power — does not have sovereignty over Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, which Palestinians consider the capital of a future state.
The AU also rejected what it described as attempts to alter the geographic, demographic, and cultural identity of the city.
The organisation specifically highlighted the religious significance of Al-Aqsa Mosque, also known as Al-Haram Al-Sharif, describing it as a sacred place of worship for Muslims.
The union called on the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to ensure the protection of religious freedoms and the preservation of the historical and legal status of holy sites in Jerusalem.
It also urged Israeli authorities to reopen the gates of Al-Aqsa Mosque and remove restrictions limiting Palestinian access to the occupied city.
The AU referenced several United Nations resolutions — including Resolutions 252 (1968), 267 (1969), and 476 (1980) — which address the legal status of Jerusalem and call for respect for the city’s historical character.
The continental body emphasised that lasting peace in the Middle East can only be achieved through dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to international agreements.
It also reiterated its support for a two-state solution, which envisions Israel and an independent Palestinian state coexisting peacefully and securely.
The African Union, which represents 55 member states across Africa, has consistently advocated for Palestinian rights while calling for renewed global diplomatic efforts to resolve the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
