The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over worsening insecurity, following Nigeria’s ranking as the fourth most terrorism-affected country in the latest Global Terrorism Index (GTI).
Alarming Rise in Terror Attacks
According to the 2026 GTI report, Nigeria recorded a 46% increase in terrorism-related deaths, with fatalities rising to 750 in 2025.
The report identified Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram as responsible for 80% of all terror-related killings in the country.
Globally, terrorism remains highly concentrated, with nearly 70% of deaths occurring in just five countries:
- Pakistan
- Burkina Faso
- Nigeria
- Niger
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo recorded the highest increases in fatalities, underscoring a worsening global security trend.
Deadly Attacks in Borno
The report revealed that two of the 20 deadliest terrorist attacks worldwide in 2025 occurred in Borno State.
One incident involved an attack on Darajamal village in Bama Local Government Area, where over 60 people, including soldiers, were killed.
Another attack in Kukawa LGA saw dozens of civilians abducted and killed, with many others still missing.
ADC Accuses Tinubu of Failure
ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi accused the Tinubu administration of presiding over what he described as the deadliest period of terrorism in Nigeria’s history.
“While President Tinubu eats cake in London, the Global Terrorism Index confirms that more Nigerians have died under his watch than ever before,” Abdullahi stated.
He further noted:
- Terror attacks increased by 43% (from 120 in 2024 to 171 in 2025)
- Civilians account for 67% of victims
- Borno State accounts for 72% of total deaths
Proposed Solutions by ADC
The ADC outlined a three-pronged strategy to address insecurity:
1. Improved Intelligence Coordination
- Establishment of a unified national intelligence system
2. Decentralised Policing
- Integration of federal, state, and community policing structures
3. Preventive Security Approach
- Deployment of data-driven intelligence, early warning systems, and rapid response units
Controversy Over UK Trip
The criticism comes amid backlash over President Tinubu’s visit to the United Kingdom during ongoing attacks in Nigeria’s North-East.
ADC compared his response to that of former U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting that stronger and more visible leadership is required during times of national crisis.
