Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu underwent a significant change after relocating to Abuja ahead of the 2023 presidential election, claiming the President became heavily influenced by some northern political associates.
Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV, Lawal said Tinubu, whom he described as compassionate and generous before becoming President, was “caged” by political allies who allegedly surrounded him in Abuja and influenced many of his decisions.
According to Lawal, Tinubu was known for helping people in difficult situations and listening to advice while he lived in Lagos. However, he claimed that the President’s character changed after moving closer to the nation’s seat of power to pursue his presidential ambition.
Lawal further alleged that some northern politicians introduced Tinubu to individuals he described as religious extremists and convinced him they would secure the political support needed to win the presidency.
The former SGF also expressed concerns about President Tinubu’s health, suggesting that the President should prioritise his well-being after completing his current term in office.
Despite his criticisms, Lawal praised Tinubu’s generosity, describing him as someone who had assisted many people financially without expecting immediate rewards. He also said the President possesses a unique ability to identify individuals who could become valuable political allies in the future.
As of the time of this report, the Presidency has not issued any official response to the allegations and remarks made by Babachir Lawal.
