The Bauchi State Police Command has directed representatives of The Gospel of Christ Must Be Preached International Ministry, popularly known as Bishara Dole, to return to the command’s headquarters with 16-year-old Jennifer Joseph and her biological parents following fresh developments in the controversial case involving the teenager.
The latest police directive comes only days after Jennifer was released into the custody of her parents following weeks of controversy surrounding her custody, religious identity and conflicting allegations involving the Christian ministry and an Islamic Da’awah group.
The case took another dramatic turn after a video emerged in which Jennifer reportedly said she had been pressured or coerced while in the custody of the Da’awah group to make allegations against Bishara Dole officials.
Jennifer had previously made allegations against the Christian ministry in a video circulated by Islamic cleric Adam Ashaka and later repeated some of the claims during a meeting at the office of the Bauchi State Police spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib.
However, after she was released to her biological parents on Monday, Jennifer reportedly withdrew some of her earlier allegations.
She reportedly absolved Bishara Dole founder Rev. Mohammed Mohammed of allegations of child molestation and also retracted allegations against Rev. Badamasi, a ministry official who remains in police custody over the earlier claim.
In the latest video, Jennifer reportedly described some of her previous accusations against the ministry’s officials as untrue and alleged that she had been pressured to make them.
The dispute began after Jennifer’s mother, Saratu Daniel, from Ganye Local Government Area of Adamawa State, raised concerns over her daughter’s alleged removal from her care and what she described as the forced introduction of the teenager to Islam.
The mother reportedly sought intervention from President Bola Tinubu and the Bauchi State Government, alleging that her daughter had been taken away from the family without proper consent.
According to the account previously reported, Jennifer had been taken to Bishara Dole in Bauchi after her family became concerned about her religious situation.
The situation later changed when a man identified as Abubakar, who allegedly presented himself at the Christian facility as a convert undergoing religious classes, reportedly took Jennifer from the centre and brought her to an Islamic Da’awah group.
The circumstances surrounding Jennifer’s movement between the two groups subsequently became the subject of a police investigation.
Following weeks of uncertainty, the Bauchi Police Command eventually released Jennifer to her biological parents on Monday.
However, the matter has now taken another turn following her latest statement alleging that she was pressured to make accusations against Bishara Dole officials.
The fresh police invitation means Jennifer and her parents are expected to appear again before the command alongside representatives of the ministry.
The police have not publicly established the truth of the conflicting allegations, and several claims surrounding the case remain disputed.
The controversy has also drawn attention to the continued detention of Rev. Badamasi over the earlier molestation allegation.
Bishara Dole has rejected the allegation and called for an independent investigation.
The circumstances surrounding his continued detention and the allegation against him have not been independently established.
Police spokesperson SP Nafiu Habib has also previously disputed some claims concerning how Jennifer was treated during meetings with the various parties.
The latest development has therefore reopened a case that appeared to have reached a temporary resolution after Jennifer was returned to her parents.
With conflicting accounts now emerging from the teenager, the ministry, the Da’awah group and other parties involved, the police are expected to further examine the circumstances surrounding the allegations and Jennifer’s latest statement.
