SUNTV Global Channel — The Southern Kaduna Peoples’ Union (SOKAPU) has appealed to the family of the late Mary Habila to allow a forensic autopsy and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death at the residence of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.
In a statement signed by its National President, Engr. Tabara Samuel Kato, the association described Habila’s death as tragic and mysterious, stressing that a transparent investigation is necessary to establish the facts and ensure justice.
SOKAPU expressed sympathy to Habila’s family but urged them to reconsider reports of their opposition to an autopsy, arguing that the unusual circumstances surrounding her death require a thorough and impartial investigation.
According to the group, while the family’s grief is understandable, allowing investigators to conduct a forensic examination would help determine the true cause of death and provide answers to the many questions surrounding the incident.
The association also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders and members of the family to cooperate fully with investigators, insisting that transparency is essential to achieving justice and public confidence in the outcome of the investigation.
SOKAPU further pledged its support to the bereaved family throughout the process and called on residents of Southern Kaduna to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding while authorities continue their investigation.
The appeal comes as the Ebonyi State Police Command maintains that an autopsy is necessary before releasing Habila’s body for burial. Police said detectives have already visited the scene, obtained statements from relevant witnesses and are preparing to engage a pathologist to determine the exact cause of death.
The case has continued to attract nationwide attention following Habila’s death on June 27 at the minister’s residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) has stated that Habila’s name does not appear in its register of licensed physiotherapists, following claims that she was a physiotherapist attached to the Minister of Works’ medical team.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding Mary Habila’s death remain ongoing.
