SUNTV Global Channel — The family of 26-year-old Mary Habila, the nurse who died at the residence of Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has postponed her burial indefinitely amid an ongoing dispute over a proposed autopsy.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the family announced that the burial, which had been scheduled for Friday, July 17, has been suspended until further notice due to what it described as unforeseen circumstances.
The family expressed appreciation for the support and prayers received from relatives, friends and well-wishers, adding that a new burial date would be announced once arrangements are finalized.
The development comes shortly after the Ebonyi State Police Command reiterated that a post-mortem examination is necessary to establish the exact cause of Habila’s death before her body can be released for burial.
According to the police, detectives have completed preliminary investigations, visited the scene, obtained statements from relevant persons and are awaiting the cooperation of the deceased’s family to proceed with the autopsy.
Investigators said preliminary findings indicate that Habila, who was reportedly part of the medical team attached to the Minister of Works, travelled with him to his hometown in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, where she later died within the compound of his residence.
The Ebonyi State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has also advised that a post-mortem examination would provide crucial forensic evidence needed to determine the actual cause of her sudden death.
Minister David Umahi has denied any wrongdoing and has publicly supported a comprehensive investigation, including an autopsy, urging the public to allow security agencies to complete their work.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding Mary Habila’s death remain ongoing, while her family awaits further developments before announcing a new burial date.
