The Oyo State House of Assembly has thrown its support behind Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for an independent United Nations (UN) investigation into the recent abduction of schoolchildren and their teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, despite opposition from the Nigerian Senate.
In a statement issued on Tuesday through the Office of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, the lawmakers maintained that an independent international investigation is necessary to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the attack and help prevent similar incidents across Nigeria.
The Assembly emphasized that Governor Makinde’s request should not be interpreted as a criticism of the Federal Government or the nation’s security agencies. Instead, lawmakers described it as a responsible step aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and the growing threat of mass kidnappings targeting schools.
The House welcomed the safe rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers while expressing condolences to the families of security personnel and teachers who lost their lives during the incident.
According to the lawmakers, the increasing attacks on educational institutions have become a national security concern that may require broader international cooperation if local efforts prove insufficient.
The Assembly also defended Governor Makinde against criticism following his appeal for a UN-backed investigation, insisting that transparency, accountability, and lessons from the incident would improve the country’s security architecture.
Lawmakers noted that Governor Makinde had publicly commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, intelligence agencies, the Amotekun Corps, and other security organisations for their roles in securing the release of the victims.
Responding to the Senate’s resolution cautioning the governor against seeking international involvement, the Assembly argued that both the Senate’s recommendations and the governor’s proposal ultimately share the same objective of improving national security and protecting vulnerable communities.
The lawmakers further stated that independent investigations into major security incidents have been conducted in several democratic nations without undermining national sovereignty or the professionalism of security agencies.
They called on Nigerians to support every genuine effort aimed at strengthening national security, regardless of political, ethnic, or religious differences.
