The Anambra State Police Command has arrested three women for their alleged involvement in a child trafficking syndicate accused of selling children for millions of naira.
The suspects, identified as Florence Nnakuzie, 45, Hannah Ugah, 52, and Chinasa Daniel, 27, were apprehended by operatives attached to the Awada Divisional Headquarters during an operation carried out at a motor park in Onitsha on Saturday evening.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, preliminary investigations revealed that Chinasa Daniel allegedly brought two children—a two-week-old baby and a four-year-old child—on separate occasions between June and December 2025 and handed them over to Hannah Ugah.
Police authorities further alleged that the four-year-old child was later transferred to Florence Nnakuzie and sold for the sum of ₦2 million, while the infant was allegedly sold to another woman who remains at large.
The command disclosed that efforts are underway to rescue the trafficked children and apprehend other members of the suspected trafficking network.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described child trafficking as “a grave violation of human rights and a crime against humanity.”
The police commissioner directed that the case be transferred immediately to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a comprehensive investigation. He also ordered security operatives to intensify efforts to identify and arrest all individuals connected to the alleged syndicate.
Authorities said coordinated operations have commenced to locate and rescue the missing children and reunite them with their biological families.
The Anambra State Police Command commended members of the public whose information led to the arrests and urged residents to continue providing credible intelligence to support the fight against child trafficking and other criminal activities.
