One of Zamfara State’s most feared bandit commanders, Kachalla Sani Yellow, has been killed in Anka Local Government Area, bringing an end to the reign of a notorious figure long linked to deadly attacks, mass abductions, cattle rustling and violent raids across communities in Nigeria’s North-West.
However, conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the circumstances surrounding his death, with local residents and security operatives offering different versions of events.
According to local sources, Kachalla Yellow was shot dead on Friday, July 10, at Dan Jibga Market in Anka Local Government Area by armed men believed to be loyal to rival bandit kingpin, Dogo Gide.
Witnesses claimed that the attackers ambushed the notorious commander in broad daylight while he was reportedly conducting activities at the busy market, opening fire and killing him on the spot.
Residents familiar with the activities of armed groups in the area described the incident as another sign of the growing rivalry among criminal factions battling for territorial control and influence across Zamfara State.
However, security sources presented a different account, stating that the bandit leader was neutralised during a coordinated security operation involving troops and members of the Maiduguri Special Vigilantes, recently deployed to support ongoing counter-banditry efforts in the state.
According to the sources, the operation targeted several criminal hideouts in Anka as part of a broader campaign aimed at dismantling armed networks and eliminating high-profile commanders responsible for years of violence.
Regardless of the circumstances surrounding his death, security analysts believe the killing of Kachalla Yellow represents a significant development in the ongoing battle against armed banditry in Nigeria’s North-West region.
Kachalla Yellow was widely regarded as one of the most influential bandit leaders operating across Anka, Bukkuyum, Maru and neighbouring local government areas. He was allegedly responsible for coordinating numerous attacks on rural communities, mass kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling and violent raids that displaced thousands of residents.
Meanwhile, fresh violence has reportedly erupted in parts of Tsafe Local Government Area, with residents linking the attacks to reprisals following the death of the notorious commander.
Sources said armed men suspected to be loyal to another bandit leader, Adamu Aliero, stormed several communities, killing at least two residents and abducting more than 60 others.
The attackers were also reported to have looted food supplies and rustled livestock before retreating into nearby forest hideouts.
Security operatives under Operation Fansan Yanma, alongside personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, have intensified patrols and launched rescue operations aimed at tracking the attackers, rescuing abducted victims and preventing further retaliatory attacks across the affected communities.
