The Adamawa State Government has filed criminal charges against African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship aspirant, Umar Suleiman, over allegations that he displayed campaign posters on the Unity Flyover in Yola in violation of state environmental regulations.
Court documents indicate that the case was filed before Chief Magistrate Court II on July 6, 2026, with the Adamawa State Ministry of Environment, the State Urban Planning Authority and the Attorney-General listed as complainants.
According to the government, the charges stem from an Executive Order issued by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, which prohibits the placement of campaign posters and billboards on public infrastructure, including the Unity Flyover. The prosecution also cited provisions of the Adamawa State Environmental Protection Agency Law and the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
The legal action has sparked political debate across the state, with critics questioning the timing of the prosecution and alleging selective enforcement of the law.
Some opposition supporters and political observers argue that campaign materials promoting other political figures remain visible on the same flyover and other public structures, raising concerns about equal application of the regulations.
Legal experts have also expressed differing opinions on the matter. While some maintain that criminal offences must be clearly established by legislation, others argue that the prosecution is based on existing environmental laws and not solely on an Executive Order.
Adamawa State Commissioner for Information, Barrister Leader Leneke, said he was initially unaware of the case but noted that the prosecution relies on the state’s Environmental Protection Agency Law rather than only the Executive Order.
The case has intensified public discussion over the enforcement of campaign regulations and the treatment of political actors ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The matter is expected to proceed before the court, where the allegations against the ADC aspirant will be determined in accordance with the law.
