The Federal Government of Nigeria has demanded a thorough investigation and swift prosecution of those responsible for the killing of two Nigerian citizens in South Africa, expressing deep concern over what it described as rising xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Nigerians and other foreign nationals.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government identified the victims as Emeka Charles Iroegbu and Musa Yunana Joe, popularly known as “Big Joe.”
According to the ministry, Iroegbu was allegedly killed by officers of the Tshwane Metro Police in Sunnyside, Pretoria, on June 28, 2026, while Musa Yunana Joe was reportedly shot dead by unidentified gunmen in front of his shop in Witbank, Mpumalanga, on the same day.
The government also referenced the earlier killing of another Nigerian, Nnaemeka Mathew Andrew Expenyong, in April 2026, alleging that the officers linked to the incident have yet to be prosecuted despite being identified.
Nigeria expressed concern that the repeated attacks raise serious questions about the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa and alleged possible complicity by some security personnel in the continued violence.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs further condemned remarks reportedly made by a South African government spokesperson, who allegedly suggested that Nigerians leaving the country because of xenophobic protests should reveal where illegal drugs were hidden. The Nigerian government described the comments as inflammatory, unprofessional, and capable of inciting further hostility against Nigerians.
The Federal Government urged South African authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into the recent killings and other unresolved cases involving Nigerian nationals, insisting that all perpetrators must be brought to justice.
While extending condolences to the families of the victims, the government advised Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm, obey local laws, stay security conscious, and avoid areas prone to violence as diplomatic efforts continue.
Nigeria also reaffirmed that South African citizens and businesses continue to operate peacefully within Nigeria and called on the South African government to provide equal protection for the lives and property of all foreign nationals residing in the country.
The latest incidents have renewed concerns over recurring xenophobic attacks in South Africa, which have over the years claimed the lives of several foreign nationals and strained diplomatic relations between both countries.
