A member of the United States Congress, Riley Moore, has disclosed that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump will closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, stressing the importance of credible, transparent, and well-conducted polls.
Speaking in an interview circulating online, Moore said both he and the Trump administration would pay “very close attention” to how Nigeria conducts its next general elections.
According to the U.S. lawmaker, Washington will carefully observe the electoral process and its outcome as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 polls.
Beyond the elections, Moore revealed that the U.S. Congress is advancing legislation that could significantly influence future relations between the United States and Nigeria.
He explained that the proposed legislation contains provisions relating to Nigeria, including concerns over the persecution of Christians and conditions that could affect future U.S. security assistance to the Nigerian government.
Moore said he personally contributed language to the bill and expressed confidence that the legislation would eventually become law, describing its provisions as “strong” and “aggressive.”
The congressman further disclosed that he has maintained discussions with President Donald Trump on issues concerning Nigeria, adding that the U.S. President considers developments in the country an important matter.
The comments come amid increasing political activities ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, as opposition parties intensify preparations while civil society groups continue to call for transparent, free, and credible elections.
If passed, the proposed U.S. legislation could introduce new conditions that may shape diplomatic and security cooperation between Washington and Abuja in the coming years.
