Fresh violence has erupted across several parts of Mali after coordinated attacks by insurgents triggered explosions and heavy gunfire in multiple towns, further highlighting the country’s worsening security crisis.
The latest attacks targeted areas in northern and central Mali, with residents reporting sustained exchanges of gunfire and repeated explosions as security forces responded.
A Tuareg-led armed group, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), claimed responsibility for an assault on the northern town of Anefis, where Malian government troops and Russian paramilitary forces are stationed.
According to the group’s spokesperson, Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, the attack began in the early hours of Saturday and was aimed at military positions established after previous rebel offensives in the Kidal region.
Meanwhile, authorities in the central city of Gao confirmed that armed attackers launched rockets and opened fire on a military camp before dawn. Officials said the assault was still ongoing at the time of the report, although the identity of the attackers had not yet been confirmed.
The coordinated attacks mark another major security setback for Mali’s military-led government, which has been battling separatist rebels and Islamist militant groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State for years.
The violence follows a series of major insurgent operations earlier this year, during which rebel groups reportedly attacked strategic military installations and seized control of key territories in northern Mali.
As of the time of filing this report, the Malian government had not issued an official statement on the latest attacks, while the number of casualties and the extent of the damage remained unclear.
The renewed violence is expected to heighten concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Mali as armed groups continue to demonstrate their ability to carry out coordinated attacks across different parts of the country.
