The management of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has rejected key aspects of the Nigerian Army’s response to allegations of sexual assault reportedly involving some military personnel and members of the university community, announcing that it has begun legal action over the matter.
In a statement issued on Friday, the university said it welcomed the Army’s decision to establish a Board of Inquiry to investigate the allegations but disagreed with the military’s request for alleged victims to report directly to Army authorities.
According to the institution, survivors of sexual violence may be reluctant to report directly to the same institution whose personnel are the subject of the allegations due to fears of intimidation, trauma, or victimisation.
UNIOSUN stressed that it would not disclose the identities of any students involved or compel them to appear before military authorities without their informed consent, insisting that protecting the privacy, dignity and safety of students remains a top priority.
The university also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting students who report cases of harassment, assault or abuse, stating that its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, acted in good faith when addressing the allegations publicly.
According to the institution, the Vice-Chancellor’s earlier remarks were intended to reassure the university community and demonstrate the institution’s commitment to student welfare, rather than prejudge the outcome of any investigation.
UNIOSUN further maintained that investigations into sexual assault allegations should be independent, transparent and victim-centred to ensure confidence in the process and encourage survivors to come forward.
The university also rejected suggestions that its previous statements on the matter were misleading and disclosed that its legal advisers have been instructed to commence appropriate court proceedings.
The development follows an earlier statement by the Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, which announced the constitution of a Board of Inquiry and appealed to alleged victims and witnesses to provide evidence to assist ongoing investigations into claims that some recently graduated soldiers sexually assaulted female students living in hostels around the university.
The Nigerian Army has stated that its investigation is ongoing, while UNIOSUN says it will continue to protect the interests and welfare of its students as the matter proceeds through legal and investigative channels.
