BREAKING: Kogi Teacher Dies After Alleged Assault by Parent Over Pupil’s Discipline; Police Launch Homicide Investigation

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the death of 30-year-old teacher Maryam Usman, who reportedly died days after she was allegedly assaulted by the parent of a pupil she disciplined at a private school in Olamaboro Local Government Area.

According to the police, the incident occurred on June 18, 2026, at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Okpo District.

Police spokesperson ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat said preliminary investigations indicate that a man identified as Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, allegedly stormed the school and attacked the teacher over disciplinary action she had taken against a pupil.

Maryam Usman reportedly sustained serious injuries during the assault. She was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo, where her condition deteriorated. She was confirmed dead on June 25, 2026.

Following her death, the Kogi State Police Command said it has opened a culpable homicide investigation. Officers have visited the scene of the incident and the victim’s residence, while arrangements have been made to conduct an autopsy at the General Hospital in Ankpa.

Police said the suspects fled before officers arrived at the scene. Efforts are currently underway to arrest those involved, after which the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a full investigation.

The tragic incident has sparked widespread concern over the safety of teachers in Nigeria, with many calling for stronger protection for educators and swift justice for the late Maryam Usman.
