The African Action Congress (AAC) has condemned the recent Federal High Court ruling that deregistered the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), describing the decision as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy and a move aimed at weakening political opposition.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Rex I. Elanu, the AAC alleged that the court order forms part of a wider campaign by President Bola Tinubu’s administration to suppress opposition parties and create conditions for one-party rule.
The party claimed that opposition political parties, activists, and government critics have increasingly come under pressure through the use of state institutions, particularly the judiciary.
The AAC also alleged that its presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, remains in detention for political reasons, describing his imprisonment as an attempt to silence a major opposition voice.
Calling on Nigerians to defend the country’s democratic values, the party urged civil society organisations, labour unions, students, and the international community to resist what it described as a shrinking democratic space.
The statement followed a ruling by the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, which set aside an earlier judgment that directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party.
The NDC has rejected the court’s decision, insisting the court lacked the jurisdiction to overturn its previous final judgment. The party also vowed to challenge the ruling through the appropriate legal channels.
The ruling has continued to generate reactions from opposition parties, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also expressing concern that the decision could negatively impact Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
