COPENHAGEN, Denmark — The Danish government is considering a nationwide ban on the Islamic call to prayer, known as the Adhan, as part of efforts to address what officials describe as the growing influence of Islam in public spaces.
Denmark’s Immigration Minister, Morten Bodskov, confirmed that the government will review whether it is legally possible to prohibit the public broadcast of the Muslim call to prayer across the country.
According to reports from Danish media, Bodskov stated that the Adhan should not be publicly heard across Denmark, arguing that the increasing visibility of Islamic practices reflects what he described as the gradual “Islamisation” of Danish society.
The proposed measure marks the third attempt by Danish authorities to establish a legal framework for restricting public broadcasts of the Adhan, following similar efforts in 2020 and 2025.
The Adhan, which is traditionally broadcast five times daily from mosque minarets, serves as a call for Muslims to gather for prayer. While some municipalities already regulate amplified religious broadcasts through local noise-control laws, the government is now exploring a nationwide restriction.
Legal experts, however, have warned that such a move could face constitutional challenges. Denmark’s constitution protects freedom of religion and the right to public worship, meaning any proposed ban would likely face intense legal scrutiny.
The development comes as Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen begins her third term in office following a snap election earlier this year. Her administration has drawn international attention for adopting some of Europe’s toughest immigration and integration policies.
Supporters of the proposed ban argue that it would help preserve Danish cultural identity, while critics contend that it could infringe on religious freedoms and further alienate Muslim communities living in the country.
Government investigators are expected to assess whether a nationwide prohibition can be introduced without violating constitutional protections and international human rights obligations.
