KARU, Nasarawa State — Concerns have intensified over the deteriorating state of public education infrastructure in Nasarawa State after reports revealed that students of Government Junior Secondary School, Koroduma, in Karu Local Government Area continue to learn in severely dilapidated classrooms despite billions of naira budgeted for the education sector.
Civic accountability organisation, Tracka, raised the alarm on Thursday, describing the school’s learning environment as unsafe and unfit for effective teaching and learning.
According to the group, the classrooms lack basic facilities including proper flooring, doors, windows and ceilings. The buildings are also said to have leaking roofs and cracked walls, exposing students to harsh weather conditions and safety risks.
Tracka disclosed that more than 225 students attend the school and are forced to endure these poor conditions daily while pursuing their education.
The organisation further noted that the challenges extend beyond infrastructure, alleging that the school lacks essential learning materials, laboratories, laboratory equipment and an adequate number of teachers.
“We implore the relevant authorities to facilitate the immediate construction and equipping of proper classrooms, laboratories and examination halls. Every child deserves access to quality education,” the group stated.
Tracka called on the Nasarawa State Government, Governor Abdullahi Sule, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), and the Federal Ministry of Education to urgently address the situation.
The development has renewed scrutiny of government spending on education in the state. A review of Nasarawa State’s budget performance showed that only about 44 percent of the Ministry of Education’s capital expenditure allocation was utilised in 2025.
Out of the N33 billion budgeted for education capital projects in 2025, approximately N14.5 billion was reportedly spent. Similarly, in 2024, only N7.1 billion was expended from the N14.2 billion allocated for education infrastructure and development.
