China has announced fresh trade restrictions against dozens of American companies in a move widely seen as retaliation for recent actions taken by the United States government against Chinese firms.
According to Chinese authorities, 10 U.S. companies have been placed on China’s export control list, effectively preventing them from obtaining dual-use goods and technologies from Chinese suppliers. The affected firms include rare earth producers, drone manufacturers, aerospace companies, and military equipment suppliers.
In a separate measure, Beijing also barred 46 American companies—most of them linked to the defense industry—from participating in Chinese government procurement contracts.
The latest restrictions come after the U.S. Department of Defense expanded its list of Chinese companies allegedly connected to China’s military activities. Several major Chinese technology giants, including Alibaba, Baidu, and electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, were recently added to the Pentagon’s watchlist.
Despite the tit-for-tat measures, analysts believe the latest actions are largely symbolic and are unlikely to trigger a major escalation in relations between the world’s two largest economies. Experts note that many of the targeted American firms have limited business exposure within China.
The U.S. military-linked designation does not amount to full sanctions, but it restricts the Department of Defense from awarding direct contracts to listed companies beginning later this month, with broader procurement restrictions expected to follow.
Chinese officials have vowed to defend what they describe as the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese businesses, accusing Washington of using national security concerns as a justification for discriminatory actions.
The development highlights the continuing tensions between Beijing and Washington over technology, national security, and global trade, even as both sides seek to maintain overall stability in bilateral relations.
