ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Federal Government has unveiled plans to roll out a nationwide digital postcode and addressing system designed to strengthen security operations, improve emergency response, and enhance public service delivery across the country.
Speaking at the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System Workshop in Abuja, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed that the initiative has received approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) under the National Digital Addressing Policy.
According to the minister, every home, business, and location in Nigeria will be assigned a unique and verifiable digital address, making it easier for security agencies, emergency responders, and government institutions to locate people and places accurately.
Tijani revealed that the first phase of the project is expected to commence in October, with multiple states set to benefit from the rollout before the end of the year.
He explained that the digital addressing system will not only support postal services but will also play a crucial role in tackling insecurity, improving logistics and e-commerce operations, strengthening national planning, and enhancing government service delivery.
The minister added that the government is already working on integrating the platform into public institutions as part of its broader efforts to accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation and build a more efficient digital economy.
