The Department of State Services (DSS) has intercepted a major shipment of illegal weapons in Kano State and arrested a suspected arms supplier believed to be linked to notorious bandit groups operating in Nigeria’s North-West region.
According to security sources, the operation was carried out in Gezawa Local Government Area following intelligence reports that led operatives to a suspected arms courier identified as Abubakar Muhammad.
The suspect was reportedly tracked and apprehended while transporting a cache of military-grade weapons believed to be destined for criminal elements operating in Zamfara State.
Items recovered during the operation include:
• Three AK-47 assault rifles
• Four Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) launch tubes
• Two empty ammunition magazines
Intelligence sources disclosed that the weapons were allegedly being delivered to Saidu Marafa, a wanted bandit leader accused of orchestrating attacks, kidnappings, and violent crimes across several communities in Zamfara State.
The DSS described the operation as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal supply networks and cut off the flow of weapons to armed groups terrorising parts of the country.
Security officials said the success of the mission was driven by actionable intelligence, which enabled operatives to intercept the suspect before the weapons could reach their intended destination.
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation, including forensic analysis of the recovered weapons and digital evidence linked to the suspect.
Abubakar Muhammad remains in DSS custody and is expected to face prosecution upon the conclusion of investigations.
The latest operation highlights increasing efforts by security agencies to target arms trafficking networks and weaken the logistics chains sustaining banditry, terrorism, and organised criminal activities across Nigeria.
