The Borno State Government has reintegrated 720 former insurgents, 992 spouses, and 2,050 children into various communities across the state following the completion of its deradicalisation, rehabilitation, and reintegration programme.
The beneficiaries, described by authorities as “low-risk” former insurgents and their families, underwent rehabilitation at the Hajj Camp in Maiduguri under the state’s counter-insurgency initiative known as the “Borno Model.”
According to the government, the programme included vocational training, counselling, education, religious reorientation, and skills acquisition in areas such as tailoring, carpentry, metalwork, solar installation, phone repairs, bricklaying, motorcycle maintenance, and other trades aimed at helping participants rebuild their lives.
Speaking during the reintegration ceremony, Special Adviser to Governor Babagana Zulum on Security, Brigadier General Abdullahi Ishaq (Rtd), said the initiative remains a key component of Borno’s non-military approach to ending insurgency and promoting peace in the region.
He stated that the programme, which began in July 2021, has encouraged thousands of insurgents to surrender and abandon violence. According to him, the latest group represents Batch 9 of the rehabilitation exercise.
Officials disclosed that community leaders and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) participated in screening and verification processes before approval was granted for the reintegration.
The government further revealed that with the latest exercise, a total of 9,680 individuals have now been reintegrated into society across nine batches under the programme.
While supporters of the initiative view it as a pathway to lasting peace and community rebuilding, critics continue to express concerns about accountability, justice for victims, and the long-term security implications of reintegrating former insurgents.
