The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has explained the reasons behind the delayed conduct of Mathematics and Agricultural Science examinations in some centres across Nigeria during the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to the examination body, a combination of logistical challenges, security concerns, and a tragic road accident involving examination officials contributed to the disruption experienced by candidates in affected centres.
In a statement issued on Monday by WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola F. Adesina, the Council disclosed that three officials lost their lives in a fatal road accident while transporting sensitive examination materials across states.
WAEC described the incident as a major setback that significantly disrupted its examination distribution schedule.
“The delay was caused by a combination of logistical and operational challenges, notably the direct result of a devastating motor accident which tragically claimed the lives of three of our dedicated personnel transporting examination materials,” the statement noted.
The Council further revealed that existing security challenges in some parts of the country worsened the situation, making it difficult to deliver examination materials to several centres on time.
WAEC also cited issues related to the finalisation of examination procedures and late candidate registrations as additional factors that affected preparations for the affected papers.
According to the Council, public protests triggered by the abduction of schoolchildren in some areas also hindered the movement and distribution of examination materials.
Despite the challenges, WAEC said emergency measures were immediately activated to ensure that candidates were able to sit for the examinations in the affected locations.
The examination body commended its staff for working tirelessly under difficult circumstances to minimise the impact of the disruptions and ensure that the examination process continued.
WAEC reassured candidates, parents, and stakeholders that adequate measures have now been put in place to prevent similar incidents and ensure the smooth conduct of the remaining papers.
The Council also expressed gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Education, State Ministries of Education, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies for their continued support during the examination period.
Reaffirming its commitment to educational excellence, WAEC stated that it remains dedicated to maintaining the credibility, integrity, and high standards for which its examinations are known across West Africa.
The Council urged candidates and parents to remain calm, assuring them that every effort is being made to ensure a fair and hitch-free conclusion of the 2026 WASSCE.
