Police Inspector Killed By Lightning Strike At Borno Command Headquarters

A police inspector attached to the Borno State Police Command has died after being struck by lightning while on duty in Maiduguri.

The deceased officer, Inspector Abdulkadir Garba, popularly known as “Buratai,” was reportedly coordinating vehicle parking opposite the Borno State Police Command Headquarters alongside ASP Wazani Adamu when the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon.

According to a statement released by the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, the officers were carrying out their routine responsibilities around 2:19pm when strong winds began gathering ahead of a heavy rainfall.

Police authorities said the two officers attempted to take cover as the rainstorm intensified. Moments later, a loud thunderclap was immediately followed by a lightning strike that hit both officers while they were still at their duty post.

ASP Wazani Adamu survived the incident, while Inspector Garba sustained partial burns and later died from the impact of the lightning strike.

The late inspector was described by colleagues and residents as a dedicated and hardworking officer known for his commitment to duty.

His death has since thrown the police command and residents of Maiduguri into mourning, with many paying tribute to his service and dedication.
