Visa applications from Nigerians seeking to travel to South Africa have almost doubled despite concerns over attacks against foreigners and safety issues in the country, South Africa’s Consul-General to Nigeria, Prof. Bobby Moroe, has disclosed.
Moroe made the revelation during an interview on Nigerian Info FM, stating that the increase in applications shows that many Nigerians remain interested in travelling to South Africa for tourism, business, education, and other legitimate purposes.
According to the envoy, South Africa remains open to Nigerian visitors who meet the country’s visa and immigration requirements.
“The number of visa applications has almost doubled,” Moroe said, adding that the development reflects the continued interest of Nigerians wishing to visit South Africa.
The Consul-General also dismissed reports that South African missions in Nigeria had stopped issuing visas to Nigerians, describing such claims as false.
He assured Nigerians that South Africa remains open for business, tourism, and other international engagements, while urging travellers to obtain valid visas and comply with the country’s immigration laws.
“Before you travel, ensure that you have your visa, comply with the immigration laws of the country, and become a good ambassador of your country,” Moroe advised.
The statement comes amid concerns among Nigerians over reports of attacks against foreign nationals, including Nigerians, in parts of South Africa.
However, Moroe rejected the suggestion that South Africa is hostile to migrants, insisting that the country remains open to visitors.
He advised Nigerians travelling to South Africa to understand their rights, familiarise themselves with local laws, and know the appropriate channels to seek assistance when necessary.
