A 17-year-old inmate, identified as Michael Adeniyi, has made a desperate emotional appeal from a Lagos correctional facility, calling for urgent intervention over what he describes as prolonged suffering after nearly three years in detention.
In a video obtained from the facility, the visibly distressed teenager was seen pleading for help, lamenting harsh conditions and extended incarceration since his arrest as a minor.
“Please help me. I want to leave here. I am suffering here. Even my cloth is already a rag,” he said tearfully.
A voice heard in the background of the recording also condemned the situation, alleging that the teenager has remained in custody without full resolution of his case.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the case was last heard in court on May 4, 2026, and has now been adjourned until June 1, 2026.
Details surrounding the exact charges against the teenager remain unclear at the time of filing this report.
Human rights observers and advocacy groups have previously raised concerns over the case, describing it as a possible example of prolonged pre-trial detention affecting minors within the justice system.
The group Take It Back Movement in Lagos had earlier alleged that Adeniyi was arrested in 2023 when he was about 14 years old and subsequently remanded after his family reportedly struggled to meet bail conditions.
They further claimed that other suspects arrested alongside him were released, while he remained in detention due to financial constraints.
The group also alleged that the teenager’s prolonged stay in custody has had devastating personal consequences, including the reported deaths of both parents while attempting to secure his release.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State authorities and relevant security agencies have yet to issue a detailed public statement addressing the latest appeal from the detainee.
Calls are now growing for a review of the case and a possible investigation into the circumstances surrounding his continued detention.
