Panic and grief have gripped communities in following a brutal attack by suspected bandits on a group of female students in the Southern Kaduna region.
The incident occurred in Akwando village, located in , where armed assailants ambushed a truck conveying students heading back to school.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the students were travelling to Kachia to resume academic activities when the attackers struck less than 10 minutes into their journey, opening fire and forcing the vehicle to a halt.
Tragically, one of the students, identified as , was killed while attempting to escape from the attackers.
At least six other students and passengers were abducted during the нападение, sparking fears of another prolonged kidnapping crisis in the region.
The abducted victims have been identified as:
- Augustina Muntari
- Happy Muntari
- Favour Tanimu
- Patience Joseph
- Peace Irimiya
- Bishara Irimiya
Others reportedly taken include the driver and two adults accompanying the students.
In a dramatic escape, no fewer than 15 students managed to flee by jumping from the moving truck and trekking through surrounding bushes for hours before reaching safety in nearby communities.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities in have yet to issue an official statement regarding the attack.
The latest incident underscores growing insecurity across parts of northern Nigeria, particularly targeting vulnerable groups such as students, and has once again raised urgent calls for improved protection in rural communities.
Residents are calling on security agencies to act swiftly to rescue the abducted victims and prevent further attacks.
