Political tensions are building in as a coalition of ethnic leaders has issued a strong warning to the (APC) over alleged plans to impose a governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
The group, operating under the Gongola Peoples umbrella and representing indigenous communities from the old Gongola region, described any such move as undemocratic and a serious threat to internal party democracy.
Addressing journalists, the leaders accused unnamed power brokers within the party of attempting to sideline party members and the general electorate in deciding who emerges as the party’s flagbearer.
Speaking on behalf of the group, warned that any attempt to impose a candidate would be resisted, describing it as “a dangerous slide towards political authoritarianism.”
“We will not accept, tolerate, or allow any form of imposition on our people,” the group declared, stressing their readiness to use all legitimate means to defend the democratic process.
While reaffirming their support for the current administration at the federal level, the leaders made it clear that such backing does not extend to state-level political arrangements in Adamawa.
They called on the APC leadership to ensure a transparent, free, and credible primary election process, insisting that all aspirants must be given a level playing field.
According to the group, any candidate must emerge through the will of party members and delegates—not through the influence of a powerful few.
The leaders also warned that imposing a candidate could deepen internal divisions within the party and weaken its chances in the 2027 general elections.
They urged both national and state leaders of the APC to abandon what they described as a “dangerous path” and uphold democratic principles, cautioning that the political atmosphere in Adamawa could become volatile if their concerns are ignored.
