Nigeria’s aviation sector is facing fresh disruption as leading carrier announced widespread flight delays due to a severe shortage of aviation fuel, leaving passengers stranded across multiple airports.
In an official notice released on Saturday, the airline warned that several scheduled departures from its terminals may not operate as planned, citing ongoing fuel supply challenges affecting operations nationwide.
“Flights departing from some of our terminals may experience delays due to the current aviation fuel supply constraints,” the airline stated, adding that fuel availability remains critically limited.
The development has triggered frustration among travellers, many of whom were left waiting for hours with no clear timeline for when normal operations will resume.
Despite assurances from the airline that it is working with relevant stakeholders to resolve the issue, concerns are growing over what many describe as a recurring crisis in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
Air Peace emphasized that passenger safety remains its top priority and urged affected customers to remain patient while efforts are underway to stabilise flight schedules.
However, industry analysts warn that the disruption reflects deeper structural challenges, including rising operational costs and unstable fuel supply chains.
Earlier, the (AON) had raised alarm over the skyrocketing cost of Jet A1 fuel, revealing that prices surged from ₦900 per litre in February to about ₦3,300 per litre within weeks — an increase of over 300 percent.
The group described the spike as unsustainable, warning that airlines can no longer absorb the rising costs without either increasing ticket prices or suspending operations altogether.
AON also cautioned that continued pressure could force more airlines to ground their fleets, with one operator already halting operations since March due to the fuel crisis.
Industry stakeholders have accused fuel marketers of worsening the situation, urging urgent intervention to align local prices with global market trends.
