Residents of are living in fear following reports that heavily armed gunmen have taken over forest areas and launched coordinated attacks on several communities.
The affected areas, including Igbo, Igurita, Omagwa, and Omademe, have witnessed a surge in violence, with locals alleging killings, kidnappings, and sustained assaults by large groups of armed attackers.
Raising alarm during a press conference, the President-General of the , , condemned what he described as the “illegal occupation” of forests across the region.
According to him, the attackers—reportedly numbering over 200—are heavily armed and have overwhelmed local vigilante groups, leaving communities defenceless.
“These bandits have made life unbearable for our people,” Onuekwa said, accusing security agencies of failing to respond decisively to the escalating threat.
He cited a recent incident on April 8, where gunmen stormed a community, abducting a couple and later kidnapping the head of a local vigilante group, identified as Mr. Collins, after overpowering security volunteers.
The worsening insecurity is particularly concerning due to the area’s proximity to the , raising fears about broader security implications.
Community leaders warn that the situation has outgrown the capacity of local security outfits and are calling on both state and federal authorities to urgently deploy military and security forces to reclaim the forests and restore order.
As tensions rise, residents continue to demand immediate intervention to prevent further loss of lives and property.
