The (EFCC) has issued a strong warning over the rising activities of impersonators posing as its officials to extort unsuspecting Nigerians.
In a public alert, the anti-graft agency revealed that criminal gangs are now staging fake “sting operations,” targeting young people in eateries, lounges, and other social spots across major cities.
According to the EFCC, these fraudsters often ambush victims, falsely accuse them of internet fraud, and forcefully seize their phones, money, and other valuables without any evidence.
The Commission disclosed that some of the impostors go as far as wearing fake EFCC uniforms and transporting victims to locations designed to look like official offices, making their illegal activities appear legitimate.
In another disturbing trend, armed groups reportedly stop motorists, using vehicle plate numbers as excuses to intimidate and extort money from them under false claims.
The agency also warned about misleading online content, where individuals stage fake EFCC raid videos—complete with forced entries and chaotic scenes—to deceive the public and damage the Commission’s reputation.
The EFCC stressed that it operates under strict legal procedures and urged Nigerians to always verify the identity of anyone claiming to be its officer before complying with any demands.
Citizens were also encouraged to report suspicious activities and avoid falling victim to these growing criminal tactics.
