The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that three people were injured after a vigilante member accidentally discharged a firearm in the Osiele area of Odeda Local Government Area, while also announcing the arrest of three suspects and recovery of illegal weapons in separate operations across the state.
According to the Command, the incident involving the vigilante occurred in the Sawmill area of Osiele. The spokesperson of the Command, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, said preliminary findings showed that the suspect, identified as Mutiu Sadiku, allegedly discharged his weapon accidentally while returning from the farm.
The accidental discharge reportedly left three persons injured. They were quickly taken for medical attention and are currently in stable condition.
The police further stated that the firearm used in the incident was recovered through joint efforts with the , while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing.
In a related development, the Ogun State Police Command also announced the arrest of three suspects in separate intelligence-driven operations carried out in Mowe, Sagamu, and Odeda.
The Command said operatives recovered three firearms and 17 cartridges during the operations, which were part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal possession of weapons and violent crime across the state.
In Mowe, a 36-year-old suspect was arrested after being found with a locally made pistol, an expended cartridge, and charms. The suspect allegedly confessed to being a member of a cult group during interrogation.
In Sagamu, two additional suspects were intercepted during stop-and-search operations along the Sagamu/Ogijo Road. One was found with a loaded locally made firearm, while the other was in possession of a double-barrel gun with cartridges. Both failed to give satisfactory explanations about the weapons.
All suspects have since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the officers involved in the operations and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intensifying the crackdown on illegal arms possession, cultism, and other violent crimes in Ogun State.
He added that the Command would continue intelligence-led operations to ensure public safety and reduce crime across the state.
