A new report by Amnesty International has raised serious alarm over worsening insecurity in Nigeria, revealing that at least 1,100 people were abducted between January and April 2026.
The organisation said the wave of kidnappings—mostly affecting northern states—has reached “horrifying levels,” calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration to take urgent and decisive action to protect civilians.
According to the report, victims of these abductions are often subjected to extreme abuse, including torture, starvation, rape, and prolonged captivity, while many communities continue to suffer repeated attacks by armed groups.
Amnesty International Nigeria Director, Isa Sanusi, said kidnapping has increasingly become a major criminal enterprise driven by ransom demands, with victims sometimes held for months under inhumane conditions.
The report documented several large-scale attacks across the country, including incidents in Kwara, Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger, and Borno states, where hundreds of people were abducted in coordinated raids by armed groups and suspected insurgents.
In one of the most devastating incidents cited, armed attackers invaded communities in Kwara State, killing residents and abducting dozens, while in Borno State, Boko Haram-linked fighters reportedly abducted over 400 people in a single attack on a community in Gwoza LGA.
The organisation warned that the rising wave of kidnappings is not only a security crisis but also a humanitarian emergency, forcing families to sell belongings, abandon livelihoods, and in some cases withdraw children—especially girls—from school due to fear of abduction.
Amnesty International further accused authorities of failing to meet constitutional and international obligations to protect citizens, arguing that insecurity is undermining education, livelihoods, and community stability across affected regions.
It urged the Nigerian government to strengthen security operations, improve intelligence coordination, and take immediate steps to end the growing abduction crisis.
The report has intensified public concern over insecurity in the country, with renewed calls for comprehensive reforms in Nigeria’s security architecture.
