The government of Iran has reported that more than 1,900 civilians, including women and children, have been killed amid ongoing military strikes it attributes to the United States and Israel.
The casualty figures were disclosed during a media briefing by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), which also indicated that over 20,000 people have been injured in the conflict.
Iran’s Minister of Science, Hossein Simayi Sarraf, alleged that at least 30 universities across the country have been struck, describing the attacks on educational institutions as a “crime against humanity.”
He condemned what he called the systematic destruction of civilian and scientific infrastructure, stating that such actions reflect a dangerous regression in modern warfare.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, raised alarm over repeated strikes on the Bushehr nuclear power facility, warning of potentially catastrophic environmental consequences.
According to him, the facility has been hit multiple times, and any radioactive fallout could severely impact countries within the Gulf region.
Araghchi also accused Western nations of double standards, comparing the global reaction to incidents near Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant with what he described as silence over attacks in Iran.
The ongoing conflict has intensified humanitarian concerns, with international organisations struggling to respond to the growing number of casualties and the destruction of critical infrastructure.
