In a disturbing development that has heightened fears across Nigeria’s North-East, hundreds of suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters have been spotted holding a large, armed Eid prayer gathering in the Lake Chad region of Borno State—just days after deadly bomb attacks rocked Maiduguri.
Footage released on Saturday by a known insurgent propaganda platform shows heavily armed fighters assembled in an open field, observing Eid prayers in organized rows while carrying assault rifles and other sophisticated weapons. The display, bold and highly coordinated, signals what analysts describe as a renewed show of strength by the terror groups.
Eid, a sacred Islamic celebration marking the end of Ramadan, is traditionally associated with peace, unity, and reflection. However, the presence of armed insurgents openly conducting prayers has sparked widespread concern, raising fresh questions about the security situation in the region.
The location, believed to be within the Lake Chad axis of Borno State, has long served as a stronghold for insurgent activities. Security experts say such a public gathering suggests the groups still maintain significant operational capacity despite ongoing military offensives.
This development comes on the heels of the March 16 bombings in Maiduguri, one of the deadliest attacks the city has witnessed in recent years. Multiple explosions targeted densely populated civilian areas, including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Monday Market, and a central post office.
The attacks occurred during peak evening hours as residents were breaking their Ramadan fast, worsening the impact. Initial reports confirmed at least 26 fatalities and over 100 injuries, though some estimates suggest the death toll may be higher.
Emergency services were overwhelmed as victims flooded hospitals, with eyewitnesses recounting chaotic scenes and delays in medical response. The coordinated nature of the bombings, believed to involve suicide attackers, reflects a familiar and deadly pattern used by insurgent groups in the region.
