At least two people have been confirmed dead following separate gas-related explosions in Nigeria, affecting Lagos and Calabar.
In Lagos, the fatal incident occurred along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in the Sangotedo area around 2 a.m., when a tipper truck collided with a stationary gas-laden truck.
The impact triggered a massive explosion, killing the driver and his assistant, who were reportedly burnt beyond recognition.
The resulting fire spread rapidly, destroying:
- Three warehouses
- About ten roadside shops
- Several vehicles, including buses and a car
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service later contained the blaze, preventing further damage.
Meanwhile, in Calabar, a separate explosion occurred at a filling station along Edibe Edibe Road in Calabar South.
Eyewitnesses described the blast as extremely powerful, initially fearing it was a bomb explosion due to the intensity.
Although no deaths were confirmed in the Calabar incident at the time, residents criticised the delayed response of emergency services, noting that it took significant time before help arrived.
The state Commissioner of Police, Rashid Agegbua, visited the scene to assess the situation.
These back-to-back explosions have raised fresh concerns over safety compliance in the handling and transportation of petroleum products across the country.
Experts warn that without stricter enforcement of safety regulations and faster emergency response systems, such incidents may continue to pose serious threats to lives and property.
