The Federal Government of Nigeria has ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved in the alleged sexual assault and public stripping of women in Ozoro.
The directive was issued by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, following widespread outrage over a viral video linked to a local festival in Isoko North Local Government Area.
In a statement released in Abuja, the minister described the incident as disturbing, unacceptable, and a violation of human dignity and the rule of law.
“No cultural or traditional practice can justify sexual violence in any form,” she stated.
She commended the response of the Delta State Police Command but called for a transparent, thorough, and accelerated investigation to ensure all perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.
The minister emphasized that such acts are clear violations under Nigerian law, including protections provided by the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act).
She also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting women and girls, announcing plans to collaborate with the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs to provide victims with:
- Psychosocial support
- Medical care
- Legal assistance
The development follows earlier condemnation by the Nigerian Bar Association, which described the incident as a “national disgrace.”
Authorities have since intensified investigations, while security agencies have been directed to track down all individuals involved.
The case has sparked nationwide outrage and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws against gender-based violence.
