Governor Charles Soludo has declared that the long-running Monday sit-at-home order in Anambra State has effectively ended, following major security crackdowns across the state.
Speaking during a media chat in Awka, Soludo revealed that over 60 criminal camps have been dismantled, restoring stability in at least eight local government areas previously affected by armed groups.
He also claimed that Anambra is now the safest state in Nigeria, noting that there have been no major security incidents in the past three to four months.
“The sit-at-home is over… schools, markets, factories and public services are back. Flights have also resumed on Mondays,” Soludo said.
The controversial sit-at-home order had been widely linked to Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and had severely disrupted economic and social activities across the South-East region for years.
To achieve the reported turnaround, the governor pointed to new policies and security measures, including a homeland security law, anti-cultism operations, and the creation of local security outfits such as Agunechemba and Operation Ugodachi.
Soludo recalled the tense period leading up to the 2021 governorship election, when violence made it dangerous for residents to openly show political affiliation.
“People were killed just for wearing party paraphernalia,” he noted.
Despite the progress, the governor admitted that total security is not yet guaranteed, describing the situation as “a work in progress.”
The announcement marks a significant claim in the region’s ongoing struggle with insecurity, though observers are expected to closely monitor whether the improvements are sustained.
