The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has raised alarm over the deteriorating security situation in South-West Nigeria, blaming political interference and poor structure within regional security systems.
Adams criticised the operations of Amotekun Corps, stating that the outfit has been heavily politicised, with recruitment driven by political loyalty rather than competence.
“The recruitment into Amotekun has been highly politicised… some state actors now use it to reward political followers,” he said.
He expressed disappointment that the security outfit has fallen short of expectations, stressing that effective security requires proper background checks and the integration of local intelligence.
Adams warned that the South-West’s past reputation for peace has created complacency, making the region increasingly vulnerable to criminal activities and banditry spreading from other parts of the country.
Referencing a recent killing in Akure, he lamented that even traditional rulers are no longer safe, stating that a monarch was “killed like a chicken,” highlighting the severity of the crisis.
The Yoruba leader also linked the worsening insecurity to Nigeria’s centralised policing system, reiterating his call for the establishment of state police. According to him, community-based policing is essential for effective intelligence gathering and rapid response.
He further warned that insecurity is damaging Nigeria’s global image, discouraging investors and reducing tourism, with neighbouring countries benefiting from the shift.
Adams concluded by urging urgent reforms, including depoliticising security outfits, strengthening grassroots intelligence, and fostering collaboration between government, traditional rulers, and local communities.
