Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has called for stronger collaboration with the United Kingdom in tackling terrorism and enhancing security across West Africa.
Speaking during his official visit at Windsor Castle, where he addressed King Charles III, the Nigerian leader emphasized the urgent need for sustained international partnerships to combat growing threats linked to the Sahel region.
Tinubu noted that Nigeria carries a significant responsibility in maintaining regional peace, stressing that cooperation with the UK remains crucial in confronting terrorism. He revealed plans for deeper engagement with Keir Starmer, focusing on intelligence sharing, capacity building, and joint security operations.
The event was attended by members of the British Royal Family, including Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, alongside senior officials from both nations.
Describing the occasion as a great honour, Tinubu reaffirmed the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the UK, built on shared history, mutual respect, and common values. He highlighted the role of Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly those contributing to healthcare services in the UK, as a testament to the strong ties between both countries.
Reflecting on governance, Tinubu acknowledged Britain’s historical influence on Nigeria’s democratic institutions, referencing the Magna Carta as a foundation for the rule of law and parliamentary democracy.
Despite current security challenges, the president expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, describing the nation as resilient and determined to achieve its full potential. He also appreciated the UK’s past support for Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement during military rule.
However, the visit has sparked criticism back home following a recent deadly attack in Maiduguri, Borno State, which left several people dead and many others injured.
Tinubu concluded by reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its bond with the United Kingdom, expressing hope for a future built on partnership and shared progress.
