Fresh concerns over insecurity have emerged in Sokoto State as the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Kabiru Ibrahim, has called on the Federal Government to establish a permanent military base in a vulnerable border community following renewed bandit attacks. 📰
Speaking after a recent security breach in Mallammawar Yari community in Kware Local Government Area, the lawmaker said residents have been living in constant fear due to repeated raids by armed bandits.
According to Ibrahim, the strategic location of the community has made it an easy target for criminal groups who exploit the terrain and nearby borders to carry out attacks before fleeing to hideouts.
He explained that Mallammawar Yari shares boundaries with Rabah Local Government Area, another region that has witnessed increasing activities of bandits despite ongoing security operations.
“The presence of a permanent military base will significantly strengthen security operations and protect lives and property in the area,” Ibrahim stated.
The deputy speaker noted that the establishment of a military formation in the community would help security forces respond more quickly to attacks and serve as a strong deterrent to criminal elements operating within the region.
While commending the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for their efforts in combating banditry across the North-West, Ibrahim stressed that more security infrastructure is needed to sustain the progress already recorded.
He therefore urged the Federal Government and military authorities to urgently consider setting up the base in order to prevent further attacks, reduce displacement of residents, and protect properties in the affected communities.
Ibrahim also appealed to residents to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing credible and timely intelligence that could assist in tracking down criminal groups operating in the area.
Meanwhile, residents of Mallammawar Yari and surrounding communities say they remain hopeful that a stronger military presence will help restore peace, stability, and normal life in the region.
