Authorities in Austin have launched a terrorism investigation after a gunman wearing an Iranian flag and clothing bearing Islamic inscriptions carried out a deadly shooting outside a popular downtown bar, leaving multiple people dead and several others injured.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the attack occurred shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Sunday along the busy West Sixth Street entertainment corridor, where large weekend crowds typically gather.
According to police, the lone suspect opened fire on patrons standing outside Buford’s bar, killing two victims and wounding many others before officers confronted and fatally shot him at the scene. Authorities later confirmed that at least 17 people were struck by gunfire during the attack, with several victims reported in critical condition.
Investigators revealed that the suspect was wearing clothing featuring Islamic references, including a shirt allegedly marked “Property of Allah.” Law enforcement sources also disclosed that he appeared to be wearing an undershirt displaying an Iranian flag or similar imagery.
During a search of the suspect’s vehicle, officers reportedly recovered a Quran, further prompting federal authorities to examine a possible extremist motive.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed that early evidence suggests a “potential nexus to terrorism,” though officials stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and no definitive motive has been established.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated that the gunman never entered the bar but instead fired from the street after allegedly driving around the area several times. Investigators believe he initially shot from inside his vehicle using a handgun before exiting with a rifle and continuing the attack.
Police responding to emergency calls confronted the suspect within minutes and shot him after he reportedly continued firing.
Emergency medical teams stationed nearby for routine weekend patrols responded almost immediately, helping transport wounded victims to hospitals across the city.
Videos circulating online showed scenes of panic as patrons sought shelter inside nearby buildings while others attempted to assist injured victims lying on the street.
Officials said the suspect is believed to be a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal, although authorities have not yet publicly confirmed his identity.
The shooting came amid heightened global tensions following recent U.S.-led military actions involving Iran, prompting concerns about potential retaliatory violence. However, investigators cautioned that no direct link has yet been established.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised first responders for their swift action, noting that their rapid intervention likely prevented a higher death toll.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott also expressed condolences to the victims’ families and announced increased security patrols around key locations across the state.
Authorities said the identities of both the victims and the suspect will be released after families have been notified, as federal and local agencies continue to examine evidence and the suspect’s background.
