The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has removed embattled senior officer Bukola Yemisi Kuti from her powerful role at Force Headquarters and redeployed her to the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State.
Multiple senior sources within the Nigeria Police Force confirmed to SaharaReporters that the decision took effect immediately and has already triggered intense debate across the Force.
Kuti, who served as Principal Staff Officer 2 (PSO2) to former Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun, held one of the most influential administrative positions at police headquarters.
According to a senior police insider, the move is widely seen as a major shake-up within the police hierarchy.
“The Acting IGP has removed ACP Kuti as PSO2 to the former IGP and redeployed her to NIPSS Kuru,” the source said.
Her removal has stirred strong reactions among both senior officers and rank-and-file personnel, with many interpreting it as a corrective administrative action following months of controversy.
Kuti’s rise within the Force had long drawn scrutiny.
Sources alleged that despite joining the police in 2012, she advanced unusually quickly compared to colleagues with significantly longer years of service.
Insiders further claimed she wielded enormous influence over postings, promotions, and key internal decisions at Force Headquarters.
Her proximity to former police boss Egbetokun also fueled controversy, with critics questioning the transparency of her promotions.
The controversy intensified after reports linked her to a legal dispute involving Omoyele Sowore and a lawsuit connected to the Anambra State government.
According to sources, the dispute stemmed from allegations published by SaharaReporters that Egbetokun’s son received ₦100 million from the state’s security vote — claims that further heightened tensions within police circles.
The Anambra State government reportedly distanced itself from the lawsuit and rejected attempts to involve it.
Kuti was also said to be on the verge of promotion to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), a development that reportedly caused dissatisfaction among senior officers who questioned the fairness of the process.
Critics argued that her influence over promotion mechanisms undermined transparency within the Force.
While some police insiders view her redeployment as a disciplinary correction, others describe it as a “soft landing” designed to ease internal tensions while avoiding a more severe sanction.
Her transfer to NIPSS — often regarded as a prestigious policy and strategic training institution — is unlikely to end the controversy surrounding her tenure.
