SUNTV Global Channel has obtained details of a strongly worded letter sent to former U.S. President Donald Trump by Nigerian political figure SKC Ogbonnia, alleging that President Bola Tinubu should be held responsible for an alleged assassination attempt on Labour Party leader Peter Obi.
In the letter dated February 27, 2026, Ogbonnia claimed that gunmen trailed Obi’s convoy after a political event in Benin City, Edo State, on February 24. According to him, the attackers opened fire but failed to hit the former presidential candidate. Vehicles and property at the residence of former Edo governor John Odigie-Oyegun were reportedly damaged.
Ogbonnia argued that the incident reflects a “dangerous decline” in Nigeria’s democratic safety, alleging that opposition leaders now face rising threats and inadequate protection.
The letter also criticized the Federal Government for what it described as a delayed response and lack of public condemnation of the incident. Ogbonnia claimed this silence raises concerns about the commitment of authorities to protect opposition figures.
He further alleged that the attack followed a controversial public statement attributed to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, which he said contributed to a tense political atmosphere.
Ogbonnia’s letter outlined what he described as a long pattern of political intimidation dating back to Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State governor. He referenced the unresolved 2006 killing of PDP aspirant Funsho Williams as part of his claims, though no court ruling has linked Tinubu to the case.
He also cited activist Omoyele Sowore, who has previously alleged facing harassment and arrests in recent years.
In his closing remarks, Ogbonnia urged Trump and the international community to pay closer attention to Nigeria’s political climate, warning that escalating tensions could threaten democratic stability in the country.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official confirmation from security agencies regarding the alleged assassination attempt, and the presidency has not issued a formal response to the claims contained in the letter.
