In a dramatic shake-up at the top of Nigeria’s police hierarchy, President Bola Tinubu has removed Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun from office, according to sources at the Presidential Villa and within the Police Service Commission.
Egbetokun, whose tenure was marred by controversies, scandals, and allegations of favoritism, will hand over to Assistant Inspector General Tunji Disu, who currently oversees the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.
Sources revealed to SUNTV that Egbetokun was summoned to the Presidential Villa and instructed to prepare his handover notes. “He is incompetent and the scandals are just too many. He is power-drunk,” one source said, adding that the President advised Egbetokun to focus on his kidney-related health issues.
Reports indicate that the news of Egbetokun’s removal was met with jubilation within police ranks. “Police officers celebrated when they heard the news. The First Lady, Remi Tinubu, reportedly wanted him to stay, but the President was firm in his decision,” the source added.
Egbetokun’s extended stay in office had drawn widespread criticism. His tenure surpassed the mandatory retirement age of 60 or 35 years of service, prompting debates about favoritism and disregard for institutional rules.
Further fueling controversy were rapid promotions within his inner circle, including that of Bukola Yemisi Kuti, a Principal Staff Officer linked to Egbetokun personally and allegedly romantically, raising allegations of nepotism within the police force.
The appointment of Tunji Disu is seen by observers as a potential turning point for Nigeria’s policing system, coming after years of mounting pressure for reform and accountability.
