UK-based Nigerian blogger Maureen Badejo has regained her freedom after fulfilling bail conditions set by a Lagos Magistrate’s Court, following her recent arrest over petitions linked to her online publications.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that Badejo was released on Tuesday after meeting the bail requirement of ₦10 million with one surety acceptable to the court.
The blogger was initially arrested on February 6 in Lagos by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, specifically detectives attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). She was later interrogated at the police cybercrime unit in Yaba.
Petitions From Prominent Clerics
Sources revealed that Badejo’s arrest followed petitions reportedly filed by two prominent clerics — Johnson Suleiman, General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries, and Daniel Olukoya, founder of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries.
The complaints are believed to be connected to social media content and online publications allegedly linked to the blogger, although the exact charges have not been publicly disclosed.
Arraignment Controversy
Badejo’s arraignment was reportedly surrounded by confusion, as police allegedly misdirected her legal team about the court venue. While her lawyers were informed that proceedings would take place at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, she was instead arraigned at the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court.
Despite the mix-up, the court proceeded with the hearing and granted bail.
International Legal Background
The case also has an international dimension. In March 2022, a UK High Court ruling ordered Apostle Suleiman to pay Badejo £19,601 in sanctions related to a defamation case he had filed against her.
Reports indicate she declined a later proposal to settle the payment in monthly instalments, while diaspora supporters reportedly contributed funds toward her legal defense.
