News Report (SUNTV Global Channel Style):
A tragic incident has plunged residents into mourning in Enugu State after a massive tree uprooted by a violent rainstorm crashed onto a moving commercial bus, leaving several passengers feared dead.
SUNTV Global gathered that the heartbreaking accident occurred Tuesday night along the Ukwu Akpu Awhum axis as a torrential downpour, accompanied by strong winds, swept through the area.
Eyewitnesses said the storm uprooted a large roadside tree, which suddenly fell onto the highway and landed directly on an 18-seater bus reportedly heading toward 9th Mile. The impact forced the vehicle to lose control, overturn, and become severely mangled, trapping many passengers inside.
Residents described the scene as chaotic and horrifying.
“The rain was very heavy and the wind was intense. We suddenly heard a loud crash. When we rushed out, we saw a huge tree had fallen on a bus,” one eyewitness told SUNTV Global.
Another witness said the situation was devastating, noting that trapped passengers could be heard crying out for help as rescuers struggled in the heavy rain.
Local sources revealed that the accident also involved a nearby car, raising fears that the death toll could be significant, as the bus was reportedly fully loaded at the time of the incident.
Community volunteers, vigilante members, and other first responders were the earliest to arrive at the scene. Despite poor visibility and slippery roads, they worked tirelessly to rescue survivors and transport injured victims to nearby hospitals.
Residents of the Awhum community are now calling for urgent government action, including routine inspection of roadside trees and improved emergency response systems to prevent similar tragedies.
As of the time of this report, efforts to obtain an official statement from the police authorities were unsuccessful.
The community remains in shock as families anxiously search for information about loved ones who may have been traveling along the route when the disaster struck.
