The United States Embassy has issued an urgent nationwide security alert ordering all U.S. citizens in Iran to leave the country immediately, warning that rapidly deteriorating security conditions and widespread communication disruptions pose serious risks.
In the advisory, the embassy said intensified security measures across Iran have resulted in road closures, major disruptions to public transportation, and prolonged internet shutdowns, severely limiting movement and communication.
According to the alert, Iranian authorities continue to restrict access to mobile phone networks, landlines, and the national internet, making it increasingly difficult for residents and foreigners to stay connected or seek help during emergencies.
The embassy also warned that airlines are scaling back or canceling flights into and out of Iran, raising fears that commercial travel options could disappear suddenly and without notice.
“Leave Iran now,” the advisory stated bluntly. “U.S. citizens should have a plan to depart Iran that does not rely on U.S. government assistance.”
Americans still in the country were advised, if it is safe to do so, to consider leaving Iran by land through neighboring Armenia or Türkiye, while preparing for continued internet outages and alternative means of communication.
The embassy cautioned that flight disruptions may occur at any time and urged travelers to confirm arrangements directly with airlines.
For those unable to leave immediately, U.S. officials recommended securing a safe location, stockpiling food, water, medications, and other essentials, and avoiding public gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
U.S. citizens were also urged to keep a low profile, remain vigilant, follow local media developments closely, and be prepared to change plans at short notice. Keeping mobile devices charged and maintaining contact with family and friends were highlighted as critical precautions.
As part of its guidance, the embassy encouraged Americans to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time security updates related to Iran.
The warning comes amid long-standing tensions between Washington and Tehran, exacerbated by regional instability, sanctions, and recurring internal unrest within Iran.
The United States has no formal diplomatic relations with Iran, with Switzerland acting as the protecting power for U.S. interests — a situation that significantly limits Washington’s ability to provide direct consular assistance during emergencies.
Previous U.S. travel advisories have consistently labeled Iran as an extremely high-risk destination, citing concerns over arbitrary detention of foreign nationals, restrictions on civil liberties, and limited access to consular support.
The latest alert underscores growing fears that Iran’s security and communications environment could further deteriorate, leaving foreign nationals — particularly U.S. citizens — increasingly exposed and vulnerable.
